Design & Construction

The Highway

NPBH is under construction as a single project and will extend the dual carriageway 70.5 kilometres from Kwinana Freeway at Safety Bay Road in Baldivis, around the eastern side of the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary to join the existing dual carriageway on Old Coast Road at Lake Clifton.

The NPBH will be constructed to freeway standard from Safety Bay Road to South Yunderup a distance of some 32 kilometres. The remainder of the route, 38 kilometres, will initially be built as a rural highway, with the ability to upgrade it in the future as traffic demands increase.

The road will be a continuous dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

Five grade-separated interchanges will be constructed at Safety Bay Road, Karnup Road, Paganoni Road, Lakes Road and Pinjarra Road. With the exception of the Pinjarra Road interchange, these will be constructed as diamond interchanges allowing for movements in all directions. The Pinjarra Road interchange will be constructed as a Parclo where all the on and off ramps will be provided on the northern side due to the proximity of the Murray River.

Nine intersections will be constructed and will have the capacity to be upgraded to interchanges in the future. They will be located at Beacham Road, Greenlands Road, Paull Road, Mills Road, Herron Point Road, Old Bunbury Road, Dorsett Road, Old Coast Road and Peppermint Grove Road.

Local Roads

A number of service roads will be constructed to maintain access to properties whose access has been directly affected by the new development.

Integrating the New Perth Bunbury Highway into the road network will have an impact on local traffic and may affect how some residents use existing roads to travel to and from their suburb.

The new highway will cross or affect a number of roads under the control of the local government authorities. In order to ensure that the new highway is both safe and efficient the number and location of side road connections needs to be carefully managed.

This will require some local roads adjacent to the new highway to be modified including:

Traffic signals will not be used on the highway, however, they will be installed at the on and off ramps of the five interchanges to control traffic movements through these major intersections.

Given the size and scale of the project, construction is being managed in three zones – bridges, northern earthworks and southern earthworks. Construction is being undertaken concurrently along the full length of the alignment to ensure project timeframes are met. The key elements of the construction program include bulk earthworks, drainage, pavements, bridges, landscaping and public art.
