Southern Gateway Alliance completed the dual tunnel construction on the Mandurah Entrance Road over three weekends – more than two weeks earlier than anticipated.

In the first weekend, 56 of the total 110 required arches were placed at the tunnel in Parklands, and 52 of 72 arches were installed at the Mandurah Road tunnel.

The remaining arches of both tunnels were placed during the following weekend, as well as spandrel walls and electrification screens at Mandurah Road, which allowed for the two 275 tonne crawler cranes to be demobilised at that location.

Over the final weekend, the remaining walls and electrification screens were placed at Parklands, before finishing works including some tunnel backfilling and electrical works were undertaken at both locations.

Rail services and power between Rockingham and Mandurah were shut down on Friday nights and resumed early Monday mornings, giving SGA just over two days per week to work on the tunnels.

Day and night shift crews operated throughout the 60 hour period to complete the tunnels as soon as possible and minimise disruption to the rail services.

Completing the tunnel works in a shorter timeframe means the ultimate programme can also be brought forward and the project remains on track to open ahead of schedule.

Southern Gateway Alliance would like to thank residents, road users and rail patrons for their patience and cooperation during the rail shutdown period.

Time-lapse photography of the tunnel construction is now available on the home page of the SGA website.
